Police in Busoga East have arrested a man identified as Kiranda, who is the prime suspect in the defilement and murder of a Senior Two student in Mbale City. The victim has been identified as Bint Edris Sumaya, a 15-year-old girl.

According to preliminary police reports, the incident happened at a lodge in Mbale, where the teenager was allegedly defiled and later killed. The case has shocked residents of Mbale and surrounding areas, with many calling for justice and stronger action against crimes involving children.
During police interrogation, Kiranda allegedly made disturbing claims, admitting responsibility for the murder of Bint Edris Sumaya. Police sources further say that the suspect went on to claim involvement in the deaths of more than 40 other girls in different areas. These claims are still under investigation and have not yet been proven in court.
Investigators allege that Kiranda told detectives he took body parts and blood from his victims to a witchdoctor in Nakalama, Iganga District, in exchange for Shs 5 million. Police have emphasized that these allegations are part of an ongoing investigation and that more inquiries are being carried out to establish the truth behind the claims.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations and the reported confession, Kiranda was remanded and later released on bail on October 16 this year. His release has caused public anger and fear, especially among parents and community leaders who worry about the safety of children and young girls.
Police authorities have confirmed that investigations are still active, particularly into the suspect’s alleged involvement in other murders. They say files are being prepared and more suspects, including those allegedly linked to ritual practices, may be questioned as inquiries continue.
Community members have urged the police and courts to handle the matter with urgency and transparency. Civil society groups have also called for stronger protection of minors, stricter bail conditions in serious criminal cases, and faster trials to ensure justice for victims and their families.
As the investigation continues, police have asked anyone with relevant information related to the case or other missing girls to come forward and assist the authorities. The case remains under active investigation.
