State Minister for Tourism Kiwanda Godfrey on Tuesday said Uganda is endowed with beautiful women who can promote tourism.
The statement, which has since caused controversy, was made while launching an event named "Miss Curvy" where 'sexy curvaceous women' in the country will compete for a prize.
The minister said: "We have naturally endowed nice looking women that are amazing to look at. Why don’t we use these people as a strategy to promote our tourism industry?"
"If you see a Munyankole woman with curves, there is a story behind that...It will be a beautiful event where young women will showcase their beautiful curves are intellect...Our beauty is not about slimy girls only."
Kiwanda is facing a lot of criticism on social media.
Last year, President Kaguta Museveni accused the tourism ministry of failing to attract more tourist in the country.
"A country like Spain that has nothing to show be visited by 50 million people and Uganda just 2 million people and you are here congratulating yourself?
"Uganda Tourism Board is mediocre and I don't like that type of mediocrity.
"Uganda has great potential in tourism...other countries have nothing to show but they manage to attract more tourists."
In 2017, about 1.3 tourists visited Uganda bringing in 1.4 billion dollars in revenue.
