We remember special Kenyans who died this year

2018 was a year marked by many highs, but there were also lows especially those occasioned by the death of prominent Kenyans who had served the country through public service.

Here is a list meant to remember prominent politicians who dies this year.

Kenneth Matiba

Kenya’s second liberation hero died on April 15, 2018 while undergoing treatment at the Karen Hospital.

Matiba’s health troubles started in the 1990s after he was arrested while championing for multiparty democracy.

He suffered a stroke but was denied medication for three days – further worsening his condition.

In his eulogy, the family said Matiba was “poisoned” while in state custody.

 

Yvonne Wamalwa

Former Vice President Michael Wamalwa’s widow, Yvonne Wamalwa, passed on in January this year after what the family described as a short illness.

Until her death, Mrs Wamalwa was the Deputy Director in the Asia and Australasia Directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ben Okello

Migori Senator succumbed to cancer on 19 June, 2018.

His death occasioned one of the most bitterly-fought by-election as Migori residents for his replacement.

Okello’s seat is now occupied by Ochillo Ayacko who scooped it on an ODM ticket following a fierce battle with the youthful Eddy Gicheru Oketch.

 

Jane Kiano

One of the founders of Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chairperson Jane Kiano died on October 26 after a long battle against lung cancer.

The wife to former Cabinet Minister Dr Gikonyo Kiano passed on at the age of 74.

Joseph Kamaru

Although not a politician, musician Joseph Kamaru was a public figure whose music shaped the Kenyan political and social landscape for nearly five decades.
