Five people died on the spot on Wednesday evening after a matatu they were travelling in rolled along the Machakos-Wote road.
13 other passengers, who were in the 14 seater matatu, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Referral hospital.
The matatu belonging to Matapra Sacco is said to have rolled several times after the driver lost control of the vehicle following a tyre burst.
Confirming the incident, County Director of Emergency Services David Mwongela said the 14-seater matatu veered off the road and rolled several times killing the five people.
“The Matatu that belongs to Matapra Sacco was on a high speed when one of the rear tyres burst before rolling several times,” said the Machakos County Director of Emergency Services.
