Weve all come across those bosses who like to thrive on drama in the workplace, whether its verbally tearing down employees, or screaming and yelling at them.

But what happens when you become the target of the yelling?

Should you respond immediately or just ignore it and pretend it never happened?

Before you take action, allow yourself time to cool down and come up with methods of handling such a situation in a way that won't jeopardize your job.

Pull your boss aside

If there is anything that yelling can do, it can escalate a situation quickly. To calm the situation to find out what is really going on, it is important to bring your boss aside out of the eye’s view of other people in the office. Ask him/her if you can schedule an appointment to discuss things at length.

Fess up

Before step two, do some thinking as to why he/she yelled. Then, during your meeting with your boss, fess up to what you think you did wrong. Then, ask him/her why he/she yelled.

Take responsibility

Tell him/her how you are going to respond moving forward and ask for his/her input.

Express your boundaries

Let him/her know you do not appreciate being yelled at and would prefer if he/she pulled you aside to discuss things calmly next time. There is nothing wrong with having boundaries, even with your boss.
