On Friday, Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga flew to South Africa to hold talks with South Sudan opposition leader Riek Machar in a bid to end three years of civil war in Africa’s youngest country.

Sources close to the meeting said Mr Odinga and Mr Machar agreed on bare minimums that are expected to set the stage for a meeting between the rebel leader and President Salva Kiir.

And once again, Raila picked one of his most trusted allies in Suna East MP Junet Mohammed to be part of the delegation in his diplomatic mission.

The National Assembly Minority Whip has permanently cemented his place in former Prime Minister's heart and has emerged as a key member of his inner circle.

Key figure

Junet was also part of the delegation that accompanied the former Prime Minister last month when he met President Kiir during the first leg of the peace talks.

He is hardly a missing figure in pertinent meetings and functions held by Mr Odinga and was in fact part of the key players behind the ODM leader's truce talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta in March this year.

Indeed, Junet has earned Mr Odinga's trust so much that it is rumoured he might consider running for a gubernatorial seat in the 2022 general elections with the opposition leader's full backing.
