The new tuition structure will be implemented this academic year
The new tuition structure will be implemented effective from this academic year 2018/19.
All graduate programme students will be required to pay a minimum of UGX5m annually for any given programme they apply for.
Previously, postgraduate students have been paying between UGX1.7m and UGX5.7m.
Post-graduate diploma and master’s students will pay a uniform tuition fees of about UGX5m and doctoral students will pay between UGX7m and UGX8m annually.
The affected programmes include post-graduate diploma, master’s and doctoral degree programmes.
The revised tuition structure was based on the recommendations by Visitation Committee which cited, among which, low tuition paid by students, as one of the causes of poor funding.
The revised tuition structure also affects international students who fees will now be between UGX8m and UGX15m annually.
Makerere University has been struggling with low funding in the previous years.
Last month, the university’s council passed a resolution which sought to scrap government scholarships in favor of student loans in a move aimed at diversifying the university’s model of funding.
